Biography [ ]

Johnny English was born on 20 November 1955.

In 1997, he became a special agent for MI7.

Johnny English [ ]

In 2003, after another daydream about being MI7's top agent, English prepared Agent One's paperwork before turning them over the intelligence operative, who was running an investigation in France. However, English failed to confirm the validity of the code for a submarine hatch which indirectly caused Agent One's death as the man was unable to escape the vessel and was killed.

English and his sidekick Bough were placed in charge of security at Agent One's funeral and set up a checkpoint to screen vehicles entering the church driveway. English yet again failed in his duty when he foolishly allowed the criminals Klaus Vendetta and Dieter Klein to infiltrate the ceremony and plant a bomb in the casket. Not only did this lead to the deaths of all the MI7 agents at the funeral, but English inadvertently let the two assassins escape.

With no other living agents left in the country besides English, the head of MI7, Pegasus, was ordered by the Prime Minister to put him on the case Agent One had been investigating: a conspiracy to steal the Crown Jewels, which had just gone through a restoration process, largely paid for by French prison magnate Pascal Sauvage.

While waiting to meet with Pegasus, English accidentally stunned the man's secretary with a pen. He hid this fact from Pegasus, who placed him in charge of protecting the Crown Jewels, reiterating that they could not afford any mistakes. English assured him, claiming that the word did not appear in his dictionary.

During the display of the refurbished Jewels, English met the mysterious Lorna Campbell. He embarrassed himself in front of her by not only insulting Sauvage, but mistaking the Frenchman for a waiter. The businessman brushed the incident off and proceeded to address those present, thanking the United Kingdom for allowing him the honor of helping to restore the Crown Jewels. Before he could finish the speech, the power was cut and the Jewels were stolen by Vendetta and Klein.

During the chaos, English knocked out Colonel Sir Anthony Chevenix, the Head of Royal Security, thinking he was a thief. After the lights came back on and Bough noticed the unconscious man, English claimed that an assailant had attack the man and escaped into an adjoining room. After going in and keeping the door between himself and the people outside, the MI7 agent pretended to fight and subdue the fictional attacker, faking some blood on his lip with a squirt of ketchup. This ruse complete, English came out, closed the door and assured everyone that the situation was under control. Unfortunately, he failed to realize the Crown Jewels had been stolen until the Queen arrived, leading to the monarch fainting after seeing them gone.

He later gave a false description of the supposed assailant to Pegasus, head of MI7. English and his assistant Bough find the jewels were removed via a hole dug beneath their display case. The two follow a tunnel, confronting the two thieves Dieter Klein and Klaus Vendetta. The two escape in a hearse, with English trying to pursue them, but he mistakes another hearse for the escaped vehicle, gatecrashing a funeral until Bough comes to his aid by pretending he is from the Lunatic Response Unit and that English is a patient named Gunther who wasn't supposed to be released until 2028 but was accidentally released due to "a most monumental cock-up".

English connects the thieves to Pascal Sauvage, a French prison entrepreneur who helped restore the Crown Jewels. Pegasus finds the claims of his involvement absurd and warns English not to involve Sauvage. In the car park, English and Bough are attacked by Vendetta, but are unharmed beyond Bough getting a nose bleed (courtesy of English mistaking him for Vendetta and covering up for himself by saying that there could have been other thieves and adamantly insisting that Bough drop the issue and move on).

English again encounters Lorna Campbell in a sushi restaurant as he recognized her motorcycle. During their meeting English is suspicious of her since he has seen her at two of their crime scenes and her records cannot be found on any government computer. English and Bough decide to break into Sauvage's headquarters via parachutes, but English lands on the other twin tower containing the City Hospital by mistake taking hospital employees hostage until he sees the "SAUVAGE" sign from the building with Bough inside.

He then covers for himself by telling the employees that the holdup was just a test of their emergency response systems while telling Bough that he merely did a precautionary sweep of the immediate environment. Going to the correct building, the two learn Sauvage, who is a descendant of Bonnie Prince Charlie, plans on making himself king, using an impostor to impersonate the Archbishop of Canterbury. Lorna arrives, revealed to be an Interpol agent tracking Sauvage. With evidence of Sauvage's involvement, English crashes a reception hosted by Sauvage but he is suspended from work by Pegasus for breaking into Sauvage's office, assaulting his staff and insulting the foreign secretary.

With English knowing their plans, Sauvage scraps the fake Archbishop and instead sends his minions to force Queen Elizabeth II to abdicate by threatening her corgis, causing the entire line of succession to be swept clean for Sauvage to become king. Lorna, now in charge of the assignment by Pegasus, visits the depressed English and convinces him to travel with her to Sauvage's French Château to investigate.

Eavesdropping on Sauvage's meeting with renowned criminals, English and Lorna learn Sauvage plans to turn the United Kingdom into the world's biggest prison when he becomes king. English and Lorna are exposed when the former accidentally activates a microphone, and they are taken prisoners. English tries to steal the DVD of Sauvage's plan, but accidentally drops it onto a tray of identical discs and takes the wrong one without looking. Bough rescues the two and they race to stop Sauvage's coronation.

English crashes the coronation and discovers the Archbishop is the genuine article. Undeterred, English orders Bough to play the DVD, only to find it is camera footage of himself dancing in his bathroom in his underclothes to "Does Your Mother Know" by ABBA, Sauvage having bugged English's flat beforehand, much to Pegasus' disgust. English sneaks away but swings in on a wire to steal St. Edward's Crown from Sauvage. Sauvage angrily shoots at English with a pistol, causing him to drop the crown. Moments before Sauvage is crowned king, English drops from the wire after being shot, lands on the throne, and is crowned instead. In his singular act as king, English has Sauvage arrested and restores the Queen to the throne, requesting a knighthood as a reward.

In the final scene, English and Lorna drive to southern France for a romantic holiday, only for English to accidentally launch Lorna out the car by pressing the ejection seat button. Lorna lands in a hotel swimming pool, where Bough happens to be vacationing as well as a man identical to the assailant that English described to Pegasus earlier in the film.

Johnny English Reborn [ ]

Eight years later, English was in Tibet training with Ting Wang to achieve mental and physical balance after a failed mission in October 2006 to protect the newly elected president in Mozambique, which cost him his knighthood and resulted in his expulsion from MI7. Before Johnny's training could be completed, he was recalled by MI7 to London to be briefed for an important mission.

After his arrival, English met with the new Pegasus, who sent him to Hong Kong to investigate a rumours of a scheme to assassinate Premier Xiang Ping at the Anglo-Chinese talks. Whilst at MI7, English reunited with an old friend and colleague Simon Ambrose (Agent One) while receiving a variety of gadgets, a voice activated Rolls Royce and a partner, Colin Tucker, for his mission.

Upon their arrival in Hong Kong, English and Tucker went to meet a Chinese contact at a casino to set up a meeting with Titus Fisher, a former CIA operative who claims to have information about the assassination plot. After the contact was killed by a Chinese assassin, English found Fisher's hotel address on a poker chip and headed there with Tucker.

During their meeting, Fisher explained some of the plot to kill Xiang Ping, identifying Vortex, a shadow criminal organization, as the intended assassins. Fisher then showed English a key, claiming that his possession of it would finish Vortex. However, an old Chinese woman dressed as a cleaner shot Fisher before he could finish his reevaluation. When English and Tucker tried to apprehend her, her confederate grabbed the key. English pursues the man on the rooftops after sending Tucker down to the street to cut him off.

They end up in a chase on boats, English climbs aboard and commandeers a yacht. They both end up on a dock and they fight it out until English is able to outsmart his opponents and stamps of a loose floor board causing the end to flick up between the A's saints legs, leaving him motionless.

English was in Pegasus' house but forgot the key that one of the Chinese hit men steals so English stays put. English looks around but an assassin appears that turned out to be the mother of Pegasus but not the Chinese maid.

English goes in the kitchen to apologize Pegasus' mother but the real Chinese maid killer attacks English and she ran away. English captures her but English attacks Pegasus' mother and she hits English for a reason.

After that, psychologist Kate Sumner tells English to go to the golf club to meet a Vortex member Artem Karlenko who was joining Vortex for a change. English and Tucker were at the golf club meeting Karlenko for golfing. Johnny was still challenging Karlenko but a Chinese female assassin attacks English and she gets Karlenko instead. Johnny, Tucker and Karlenko were escaping in Karlenko's helicopter and escaped safely to the hospital. English was meeting Simon Ambrose for negotiating were the Chinese is and English was mad at Tucker for failures and Tucker walks away. Johnny was at the church but one of the MI7 agents discovered English and the MI7 chases Johnny. Johnny was injured by one of the MI7's agent with a Walther PPK silencer but Johnny escapes in a stolen wheelchair around London. Johnny was at the Victoria park but surrounded by MI7 and English lies down and dodges the truck from his pursuers. Johnny was at Kate's apartment resting but Simon tells Kate to go to Switzerland where his outpost is and Johnny was sad. Johnny was still at Kate's apartment but a noise coming from the outside and it appears to be that Chinese assassin vacuuming and the assassin saws English but English escapes down the garbage chute. English convinces Tucker to go to Switzerland with him and they're off.

In Switzerland, English and Tucker were infiltrating the outpost but caught by the guards when the flare alarm sets off but Tucker kills English for joining the Simon's. Tucker escorts the body bag but English was alive and was going after Simon in a body bag. He confronts Pegasus but Simon and his assistant Slater barge in and English drinks it but brainwashed by Simon's syringes. English was tasked by Simon to kill the Chinese Premier but English resists by Tucker so English was knocked out cold. English's heart was balanced that the teacher do and English was alive so English goes after Simon. English was outside riding a snowmobile, English was jumping and holding a cable car and battles Simon. Simon finishes English off but the nad kicking doesn't work so Johnny fights back. Johnny was falling off the cable car but he uses an umbrella rocket launcher and kills Simon in the cable car.

Back in London, English was awarded for his heroic action, but the Killer Cleaner attacks English and he fends her off to which she runs away. He attempts to attack her and when he brings the cleaner into the room with Pegasus, two royals guards come in. Having apprehended the real killer, Johnny English realizes that he has assaulted the Queen of England.

Johnny English Strikes Again [ ]

In 2018, MI7 is the target of a massive cyber attack from an unknown person which exposes the identities of all its current field agents. As a result, MI7 is forced to reinstate older inactive agents in order to track down the culprits behind the attack. Among the reinstated agents is Johnny English, who officially works as a school teacher after defeating Vortex following the events ofJohnny English Reborn while secretly training his young students in espionage. English insists on being given the services of his old sidekick, Bough, who is still a clerk in MI7.

English and Bough travel to the south of France to begin their investigation, where the cyber attack roughly originated from. They locate a yacht namedDot Calm in a marina nearby and try to board it during the night. There they are caught by an on board operative Ophelia Bhuletova, but manage to escape their cell, find an array of servers and leave the yacht. The next day, they decide to stalk Ophelia. When they eventually spot her leaving the yacht, they follow her car on the serpentine roads of South France, until they run out of petrol. Ophelia, well aware of their pursuit, comes back and she and English agree to a meeting. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is considering a meeting with a Silicon Valley billionaire, Jason Volta, to form an agreement.

While English is meeting with Ophelia at a bar, Bough discovers evidence that suggests she could be a spy. English, now infatuated with Ophelia, however refuses to consider Bough's premise. Ophelia is shown to be in fact a Russian spy and receiving orders from her superiors to eliminate English. Fortunately, she fails to kill English, who manages to evade her attempts after accidentally consuming a pill that causes him to become hyperactive. Meanwhile, after further series of cyber attacks, the Prime Minister and Volta solidify an agreement to be revealed during the G12 meeting. In preparation for the infiltration, English is tasked to complete a virtual reality simulation in which he explores the billionaire's mansion. However, he fails to unlock the pad to keep himself in the room and goes around London accidentally attacking many civilians around the town when he mistakes them for Volta and his minions.

After infiltrating the real mansion where he finds Ophelia and records evidence about Volta's plan with a phone, English is captured, but manages to escape and hijacks a driving school car. He fends off a chase by Volta to arrive safely back at MI7. However, he accidentally takes the wrong phone as he had dropped the other one during the chase while exiting the car and later fails to convince Pegasus and the Prime Minister about Volta's villainous scheme.

The Prime Minister, fed up of English's antics, had him fired from his job and decides to proceed with the G12 meeting in Scotland. Later, Bough convinces English to continue and stop Volta without MI7 support. They enlist the assistance of Bough's wife Lydia, the captain of a Navy submarine and arrive at the meeting location. Up in the castle's tower, Volta reveals to Ophelia that he has known her true identity as a spy since the very beginning and nonchalantly sabotages Ophelia's attempts to kill him by immunizing himself to the poison she attempts to use on him and rigging her handgun so that she can no longer fire it. Fortunately, English climbs up the tower using an exosuit and manages to intervene before Volta is able to kill Ophelia, but is ejected out due to a strap caught on a window and thus fails to capture Volta as Ophelia escapes.

Volta now joins the Prime Minister and the other G12 nations' leaders for the meeting, only for English to interrupt, who tries to stop Volta unsuccessfully again. Volta then reveals his true colors of extorting the G12 nations' leaders for control over their countries' data. English decides to call Pegasus for help, but forgets about the warning using a phone near the submarine. His call accidentally causes the submarine to launch a missile that closes in on English's beacon left on theDot Calm, destroying the boat in the process. English, who is wearing the suit of a knight's armour, Bough and Ophelia confront Volta as he heads toward his helicopter to escape. After Volta mocks English for not being able to catch him, English knocks Volta unconscious by throwing a tablet at his head before he smashes Volta's phone with a sword to stop the whole plan.

Afterwards, the Prime Minister forgives English and praises him for his bravery and courage. Weeks later, English gets his job back and returns to school, where he finds his students greeting him back as a hero. However as Johnny shows his class the stuff he used during the mission, the headmaster notices an explosive Jelly Baby and prepares to eat it.

Personality [ ]

Though English sees himself as an accomplished agent, this doesn't really become true until the end of the first film. Johnny is highly charismatic, comical, good-hearted and confident, but he is also highly imbecilic and clumsy. He does not seem to think twice before jumping into action, often failing to implement some sort of plan. He does not tend to regret or even think about what he has done wrong until the consequences are dire. In 2006, he was head of security at President Chambal 's inauguration. He was distracted from his duties by Madeleine, a seductive woman who was paid by Vortex to distract him while the president was assassinated. This resulted in him being stripped of his knighthood and his exile to Tibet for five years.

Abilities [ ]

English speaks several languages besides his native English, most notably Mandarin, although his problematic fluency often leads to him mistranslating in an understandable, yet hilarious manner. He has also used phrases in French, German, Spanish, Russian and Japanese.

Deleted Scenes [ ]

Johnny English (2003) [ ]

  • At Agent One's funeral, as part of security, Johnny stops the Foreign Secretary's car. When a male aide sitting in the vehicle tells him whose car it is, English is immediately suspicious, telling the man that he cannot be the Foreign Secretary, going on to describe her appearance most disparagingly. When English turns to look at the occupant of the other seat, he sees that the woman that he has just insulted is sitting there.

Johnny English Reborn (2011) [ ]

  • In the original opening, Johnny is found in a cave in the Himalayas by Ting Wang, who offers to make him "a warrior again, mightier than before". English comes out of the cave and asks "How?"
  • After Johnny's photo is taken at the MI7 service desk, he walks to his meeting with Pegasus. Along the way, the modernization of the organization visibly perturbs him. He is especially taken aback at seeing children on the premises. On the elevator, he sees he sees a poster advertising Tucker as the Spy of the Month. He reacts with an exaggerated eye roll. After disembarking, he finds Bough (who is now married) and expresses his concerns about the children, etc., while complimenting him on his office (actually Pegasus'). When Pegasus walks in, Johnny assumes she is an aide and proceeds to make advances on her. He is severely discomfited when she reveals his mistake.
  • While being debriefed by Ambrose en route to the Toy Cupboard, English fawns on him, calling Simon the crème de la crème (repeated several times) of MI7. Ambrose shakes it off and continues to explain the situation, that MI7 is on Code 12 because of the upcoming talks with China. The two also joke at Pegasus' expense.
  • After entering the Grand Lisboa Casino, unknowingly passing the Killer Cleaner, Tucker and English see a couple arguing in Mandarin. Johnny claims to be quite fluent in the language so Colin asks him to translate. Despite being semi-accurate, English's translation turns the couple's conversation from an argument into a romantic exchange. After the woman slaps the man, Johnny says that she was thanking the man "in the traditional way."
  • While descending the steps to the tables, English accidentally drops his sidearm, which bounces around firing off several close shots. Johnny and Colin cover by pretending to be magicians with a specialty in "the near-death experience."
  • Before entering the hotel, Johnny gets Tucker a traditional Chinese "herbal remedy" for his queasy stomach. The package actually contains dried squirrel testicles which Colin munches on while entering the hotel.
  • After Fisher is shot and lolls over, English thinks he's passed out from too much alcohol and tries to wake him. Meanwhile, the Killer Cleaner has vacuumed up the bullet's shell. Tucker comes running in and immediately starts eating some of his herbal remedy. Johnny realizes that Fisher is dead and inadvertently reveals to Colin what it actually is that he's chewing. The two agents run into the hallway with Tucker trying to put up police tape and English telling him to stop, that "this is espionage, not crowd control." Johnny grabs an elderly man who has exited his hotel room, curious about the commotion, thinking that his cane is actually a gun. After realizing his mistake, he tosses it to Tucker.
  • Before using a ladder to climb over a roof after Ling, English tries using his Semtex chewing gum to blow open a door lock. He gets the gum stuck to his finger, then his ear. With the countdown running out, Johnny tosses the gum over the side of the building and it lands on the sidewalk below, to be caught on a passerby's shoe. An explosion follows.
  • After Johnny subdues Ling and his associates and obtains the Vortex key, Tucker expresses his admiration while the audience aboard Derek's speedboat adulate.
  • At Pegasus' house, English asks Kate Sumner for her observation of his body language. She shrewdly sees through his projection of suaveness to his actual nervousness and relief at being reinstated.
  • In an extended version of Johnny and Colin's report to Pegasus and the Foreign Secretary, English tries to cover up the loss of the key by pretending that his whole presentation was "a visualization exercise", then ducking under the table after a "dropped" pen. The meeting is interrupted by Pegasus' children and their friends. The Foreign Secretary leaves, with everyone else trailing out behind him and English banging his head against the key box.
  • While en route to play golf with Karlenko, English and Tucker video-chat with Simon Ambrose and Kate Sumner. Johnny and Simon plan dinner at Ambrose's club and Kate asks Johnny to be careful. After they hang up, their car is run down by Vortex agents Slater and Madeleine who attempt to take out their vehicle with machine guns. The bulletproof Rolls-Royce is impervious and soundproof so English and Tucker are completely unaware of the attack. While Slater prepares a bazooka, Colin tries to test out the "oil" button, which leaves a slick behind them that causes the Vortex car to slide off the road and blow up. Slater and Madeleine survive.
  • After Ambrose asks the waitress to have her for dessert, he and Johnny briefly discuss women. When Simon recalls stealing some of English's girlfriends, Johnny corrects him: that he stole them all.
  • When a wounded Johnny appears in Kate's apartment following the wheelchair chase, Kate tends to Johnny's leg wound, prepares to apply an antiseptic and tells him that it will hurt. Johnny tells Kate that when he was training as a monk in Tibet, he was taught to ignore pain. However, he promptly screams when Kate applies the antiseptic with a cotton ball.

Trivia [ ]

  • Johnny English is based on a similar character named Richard Latham that Atkinson played in a series of advertisements for Barclaycard in Britain. The "poison dart pen" sequence of the first film is based on a scene in the commercials where Johnny shoots himself in the leg with the pen.
    • Atkinson also played another spy with comic relief named Nigel Small-Fawcett in the 1983 unofficial James Bond film Never Say Never Again.
  • Johnny English and Angus Bough are the two only characters of the franchise who appears in more than one movie by being played by the same actor.
  • In the first film, just after the dream introductory sequence, English is wearing the classic "Mr. Bean" outfit.
  • When he is locked up with Lorna Campbell before Sauvage's coronation, Johnny mentions a singing technique to find his way through a darkness, which he states has to be in E-flat. Although the first note he sings is a B-flat, he is actually singing in the key of E-flat.
  • In the third film, during the dance floor scene, Johnny was doing the signature dance move of Mr. Bean.
